About 'the u college nickname'|...fourth child to go to college. It truly just doesn't...currently attending, the University of Indianapolis...University (Caitlin), or the U.S. Naval Academy (Brendan...to the origin of the nickname "Purple Aces...

Hudson               Valley               Community               College,               a               part               of               the               State               University               of               New               York               system,               is               a               sprawling               campus               just               within               the               city               limits               of               Troy,               NY.

Established               in               1953               as               the               Troy               Technical               Institute               and               later               as               Hudson               Valley               Technical               Institute,               Hudson               Valley               Community               College               became               one               of               the               largest               community               colleges               in               the               State               of               New               York               System.

Currently,               it               has               over               13,000               students,               70               majors,               over               30               clubs               and               associatons,               college               sport               teams               and               intramural               athletics               (Wikipedia,               2011).

Instructors.

I               really               enjoyed               my               instructors.

If               you               are               attending               a               community               college               then               your               teachers               should               have               both               academic               and               practical               experience.

I               was               fortunate               that               my               instructors               had               both               and               that               they               believed               in               challenging               their               students.

I               remember               I               had               taken               a               course               in               English               Composition               1               and               I               thought               that               my               teacher               was               being               tough               on               me.

I               approached               him               on               it.

He               told               me               that               he               thought               that               there               was               something               special               about               my               writing               and               that               with               his               critiquing               could               take               me               to               the               next               level.

I               was               impressed               that               he               had               taken               that               type               of               interest               in               me.

He               wasn't               the               only               one---my               instructors               in               the               Schools               of               Business               and               Liberal               Arts               were               the               same.

I               learned               to               take               toughness               by               an               instructor               as               a               challenge               for               me               to               work               harder               to               reap               the               academic               benefits.

They               were               more               than               just               instructors               but               they               were               actually               my               partners               in               learning.
               Activities.

Activities               do               a               number               of               things               at               a               community               college.

They               allow               you               to               investigate               certain               interests,               possibly               grow               along               a               certain               academic               or               occupational               path,               get               to               know               your               strengths               and               interests               as               well               as               meeting               a               diverse               group               of               classmates               and               friends.

When               I               was               a               student               there,               I               liked               the               fact               that               there               was               always               something               going               on               whether               it               was               a               film,               discussion               or               performance.

I               particularly               enjoyed               the               Hudsonian               (college               newspaper),               the               Literary               Club               and               sharing               my               knowledge               as               a               tutor.
               Classes.

When               I               attended               at               Hudson               Valley               Community               College,               I               never               experienced               a               shut               out               class.

If               you               needed               to               take               a               particular               course               an               instructor               would               usually               work               with               you               to               get               you               in.

You               just               had               to               be               persistent               and               confident.

The               adage               "you               get               out               what               you               put               into               it"               definitely               applies               to               Hudson               Valley               Community               College.

It               may               be               a               community               college               but               do               not               expect               an               easy               ride.
A               few               weeks               ago,               I               was               driving               by               my               old               alma               mater               Hudson               Valley               Community               College               on               my               way               to               a               basketball               game.

As               I               passed               the               campus,               I               took               a               one               second               look               at               the               campus               from               my               car               and               it               stirred               up               memories.

Memories               of               my               first               collegiate               experiences:               navigating               the               bus               system               as               a               commuter               student,               classes,               activities               and               more               importantly               experimenting               with               my               potential               and               growth               as               a               human               being.

Reflecting               back,               isn't               that               what               a               community               college               is               for---preparing               you               for               the               next               academic,               career               or               life               steps.

It               certainly               helped               position               me               in               the               right               direction               and               lived               up               to               its               nickname               "Harvard               On               The               Hudson".
