About 'university rankings forbes'|Brandeis University - Rankings
COMMENTARY | Two years ago, I wrote for James Magazine, comparing Georgia universities to the rest of the country's and those around the rest of the world. I found that the Peach State alone would rank well against several major European countries for having three strong universities: University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Emory University. Atlanta plays host to two of these. So which are the best Atlanta-area schools? To make that determination, I focused on multiple rankings from Forbes, as well as U.S. News and World Report. I eliminated those not immediately in Atlanta, like the University of Georgia (No. 125 in Forbes), Wesleyan, Berry College, and LaGrange College (a U.S. News top 10 regional college for the South), where I teach, even though most of these schools are within an hour of Atlanta. 5. Spelman College It was a tough battle between Spelman College and Georgia State University. The two are so close in the Forbes ranking, yet so different in size and type. GSU has 24,000 students and is a public, coed school, while Spelman is a private women's college, America's oldest for African American women. Forbes gives Spelman the nod by the narrowest of margins, and its strong score among national liberal arts colleges gives Spelman the slight edge. 4. Oglethorpe University Despite the old-style Gothic buildings, Oglethorpe is hardly stuck in the past. With a self-designed major program and innovative areas of study like urban ecology and partnerships with other area schools, the school is blazing trails to raise its national profile. It also ranks well in publications of collegiate rankings. 3. Agnes Scott College The women's college boasts a low student-to-faculty ratio of nearly 10:1, which probably accounts for how competitive the students are in national competitions and winning financial awards like Fulbright Scholarships. Like Oglethorpe, Agnes Scott is thinking outside the box with a public health major, one of the few in the country. My sister-in-law, a professor at Columbus State University, sings the praises of the student quality and faculty, which provides a qualitative measure to supplement the school's strong performances in Forbes and U.S. News. 2. Georgia Institute of Technology Most reading this may be surprised that Georgia Tech isn't No. 1. The powerful science and technology school also has a strong reputation for liberal arts programs that take a scientific approach to problem-solving. The Yellow Jackets haven't lost a step and will be popular with the young student for innovative practices, like getting students involved in constructing the next video games as a way of thinking about other solutions for the business world. 1. Emory University Georgia Tech may be better known, but that may be changing as more people learn of Emory University, "the Harvard of the South." Not only does the school rank in the top 20 in U.S. News, but it also has surpassed Georgia Tech in the Forbes list, as well. I've seen firsthand the high quality of the hospital, the symposiums and conferences put on, as well as faculty presentations. And the Goizueta Business School is one of the country's best. It's only a matter of time before the rest of the country sees the school as Ivy League with a Southern accent. John A. Tures has been a professor of political science at LaGrange College in LaGrange, Georgia, near Atlanta, for the past 12 years. |
